YETI Theatre Classes

Miners Alley is continuing to offer Beginning Acting Classes in 2017.  In this first session, there will be three different classes for three different age groups.  Each class will focus on the improvisational tools needed to develop acting skills essential for actors of all ages and experience levels.  There will be no memorization this session, since the focus will be on improvisation (I’m sure the kids will appreciate that!).

This session of classes will have a final performance.  While the classes are designed to teach the basic skills needed to perform, we’ve come to realize the kids want (need?) the opportunity to show off what they’ve learned!

These lessons will build confidence, teamwork and listening skills, and form a firm foundation for working on the stage.

Spring Classes:

Classes are one day a week for six weeks.

Classes limited to 10 students per class.

Instructor: Alaina Beth Reel

From Alaina:

Each week, we will focus on different aspects of acting and theatre, including character development, storytelling, practical stage knowledge, and ensemble building.  While improv and imagination are definitely used in many games and activities, it will not be the sole direction of this course.

My goal is to give the students a chance to cultivate skills actors use to rehearse, play, and perform- which will culminate in a short showcase at the end of the session. So it won't be strictly improvisation, nor will we be producing a fully-staged production- somewhere in between.  It should be very engaging, active, and even a little reflective of what it means to be a theatre artist.

The class is for ages 13 - 18 and they will be doing 13: A New Musical by Jason Robert Brown.  It is a five-week session:  May 22 - June 23, Mondays - Fridays from 2:00 - 6:00 PM (no class on Memorial Day, May 29th).  There are openings for sixteen (16) students.

The show will be double-cast:  eight leads and eight ensemble.  The first two performances will be on Friday and Saturday, June 16 & 17.  We will use the last week of classes to switch roles:  the eight leads will become ensemble, the eight ensemble will become leads.  The final two performances will be on Friday and Saturday, June 23 & 24.  This will give everyone the experience of having a lead role as well as learning the importance of having a strong ensemble.

The class will be working with some of the best Directors in the Denver area:

Director — Rory Pierce has been writing and directing shows for well over 25 years.  He worked at the Heritage Square Music Hall and has directed at the Colorado School of Mines.  He is also the Director of Children’s Programming at Miners Alley Playhouse.

Music Director — Mitch Samu has played keyboards on Broadway, played and conducted National Tours and coached and played for Tony Nominated actresses.  He is a Motivational Speaker, Creator of“Mitch Talks” and has conducted many audition workshops for professionals and non-professionals alike.

The cast will also be performing on the stage of Miners Alley Playhouse, working on the same set and performing with the same professional musicians who will be playing for our current Main Stage show: Cabaret.

The cost is only $600 per student for the five-week workshop.  Call Miners Alley Playhouse to sign up or if you have any questions.
